Salaam Shalom Kitchen: A Decade of Dignity, Faith and Community

Salaam Shalom Kitchen in Nottingham is a collaboration of Jewish and Muslim communities, a powerful expression of unity, compassion, and shared purpose.

Every Wednesday, the local community comes together around a shared meal. It’s run by a vibrant team of more than 30 volunteers, who prepare the food, set up the space, and serve delicious meals. As it prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary in June 2025, the kitchen remains a shining example of how faiths can come together to serve those in need with dignity, warmth, and humanity.

The kitchen serves hot meals to around 150 guests each session. During Ramadan, while the regular chef was on holiday, a Muslim women's group from Nottingham University stepped in to cook, keeping the space going.

“There’s something for everyone; that’s why we have so many volunteers. You can come for as much time as you want, and there is always something to do.” - Paul, volunteer

Salaam Shalom Kitchen opens its doors to the community; guests are welcomed in with kindness and treated with dignity. Over the years, Salaam Shalom Kitchen has adapted; once giving emergency bags to guests, it now lays out the surplus food donations so guests can choose what they would like. It’s open to everyone, whether it’s someone experiencing homelessness, loneliness, or simply looking for community and connection, everyone is invited to sit at the table.

“You see the joy it brings to people.” - Warm Welcome Space Volunteer

The space has intentionally created a home-from-home experience, with fresh flowers laid on the tables, tables of hot drinks and cakes, and big tables to sit with one another. A former florist now uses her skills to arrange flowers each week, saying, “It’s about giving back, and I have a lot to give.”

“I’m proud to be part of this project; it brings out the best in people, the best in faith. Helping the needy, giving dignity, and the ability for choice.” - Mumtaz, a volunteer and steering committee member.

This project is about forming friendships despite differences and working side by side to create fresh meals each week. It defies stereotypes, builds bridges of understanding, and shows how faith can unite people rather than divide.
