For many years, one of Mickley’s most familiar faces was its lollipop man. He waved to every car that passed him, bringing a little cheer to countless people on their journeys. Those who remember him from their school days still speak warmly about his kindness and humour.
Years later, he arrived at Mickley Warm and Welcome Space as someone who needed a little kindness himself.
After losing his wife the previous year, facing his first Christmas alone and living with early onset dementia, he had become quiet and withdrawn. He found it difficult to go out and often felt there was little reason to leave home other than hospital appointments.
But he kept coming to the Warm Welcome Space.
There, people discovered that he loved dominoes. Soon, he was not only enjoying the game himself but teaching others how to play, including some of the children who attend. Each week, he began to arrive with a smile and gradually joined more conversations with the people around him.
The change has been wonderful to see. The babies at the Warm Space now recognise him and greet him with smiles, and he has found a renewed sense of connection and purpose.
His story reflects what makes Mickley Warm and Welcome Space so special. While it may not be the biggest space or have the most attendees, it has created a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together, form friendships and support one another.
Over time, unlikely friendships have grown over cups of tea, shared meals, games, conversations and simple acts of kindness. People help each other with childcare, share skills and look out for one another.
For some attendees, the Warm Space has also provided a safe place to build confidence and take small steps forward after difficult experiences.
The team’s motto is: “Come in to warm your hands but leave with warmth in your heart.”
For the people who attend Mickley Warm and Welcome Space, that could not be more true. It is a place where people find connection, friendship and a renewed sense of purpose, proving that sometimes the smallest spaces can have the biggest impact.
Mickley Warm Welcome Space in Alfreton, Derbyshire, was a runner up in the Unlikely Friendship category of the Warm Welcome Awards in June 2026.
